What Is a Deck Post?

A Deck Post is a vertical support that carries a deck’s framing and transfers its weight to a stable footing below. Posts help hold the deck level and support parts such as beams, joists, railings, and decking. Their size, spacing, and connection method depend on the deck design and site conditions.

Local relevance: Issaquah's wet winter climate can leave soil saturated, so deck post planning must account for drainage and ground stability around each footing.

Key Takeaways About Deck Post

  • A deck post stands upright beneath beams or other framing.
  • Its base must rest on a stable, well-supported footing.
  • A deck post is not the same as a deck joist.

How Deck Post Works

A Deck Post transfers the deck's load from a beam down to a Footing below. The post stands vertically, while the beam rests on or connects to its upper end. The footing spreads the load across stable ground and helps keep the support from settling.

Posts may be made from treated wood or another approved structural material. Connectors, bolts, or brackets hold the post, beam, and frame together. A Deck Joist runs across the frame and supports the deck boards, while the post supports the larger framing below. Each part has a separate role.

During deck installation, the post location follows the layout of the deck and the position of its beams. The installer checks that the post stays plumb, the connections fit tightly, and the base drains properly. Sloped ground may require careful layout so the finished deck remains level.

Expert Note

When we plan a deck installation, we review each post location against the beam layout and ground conditions. We check that posts remain plumb and that connections align before framing continues. We also look at drainage around the base, especially on sloped or wet sites.

Deck Post in Practice: A Real-World Example

For a raised deck beside an Issaquah home, a deck post may support a beam along the outer edge. The post transfers that load through its footing and helps keep the deck frame level.
