What Is a Footing?

A footing is a widened base that supports a deck post, pier, wall, or other structure below ground. It spreads the structure’s weight across the soil and helps limit settling, shifting, and frost movement. Deck footings usually connect the ground support to posts that carry beams and joists above.

Key Takeaways About Footing

  • A footing spreads weight across soil.
  • Ground conditions affect footing placement.
  • A footing is not the same as a deck post.

How Footing Works

A footing transfers weight from a deck post or pier into the soil. Its wider base spreads that load across a larger area. This helps reduce uneven settling and keeps the support in place as the ground changes.

Deck footing work starts with the planned post locations and the soil below them. The footing connects with a pier, post base, or other support part. Soil compaction, drainage, slope, and nearby roots can affect the ground preparation. A deck post then carries the beam and joists above the support.

Footings may be formed with concrete or another approved support system. The finished support must align with the deck frame. Poor alignment can place sideways pressure on posts and make the frame harder to assemble.

Expert Note

When we plan deck footings, we review the layout, slope, drainage, and soil around each support point. We also check that footing locations line up with posts, beams, and joists. This helps us address ground conditions before the deck frame is built.

Footing in Practice: A Real-World Example

A new deck beside an Issaquah home needs support along a sloped edge. The footing layout places each support on prepared ground, then connects those supports to posts that carry the deck frame.
