Why do my outdoor lights leave dark spots after installation?

Dark spots often come from poor fixture spacing, blocked light, or mismatched beam spread. A site review checks paths, planting, walls, and viewing angles before the lighting plan is set. Fixture height and direction also matter, because a bright point in the wrong place can leave nearby areas dim.

Landscape Lighting Installation for Sammamish Properties

A lighting project starts with the parts of the property you want to use after dark. We look at paths, planting beds, patios, retaining walls, water features, and views from the house.

The buyer's key choice is whether lighting should guide movement, draw attention to a feature, or support outdoor living. Good placement keeps the fixture itself quiet while directing light toward the intended surface.

This page focuses on fixture selection and placement, not a full backyard redesign. We can also connect the lighting plan with planting, walkways, patios, and other landscape construction.

  • Identify paths, stairs, planting beds, walls, and outdoor rooms that need light.
  • Choose fixture types based on the surface, viewing angle, and desired light pattern.
  • Check how the lighting plan fits the property's planting and hardscape design.
  • Request a project quote after the site scope and fixture needs are discussed.

Service Overview

Landscape lighting installation is a service that places and connects outdoor fixtures to light paths, planting, walls, and living areas.

  • Landscape lighting differs from planting or hardscape work because it focuses on fixture location, light direction, glare control, and nighttime use.
  • We provide landscape lighting installation for residential properties in Sammamish and nearby Eastside communities.

What Better Fixture Placement Changes

Focused light helps outdoor features read clearly after dark.

Balanced placement reduces the dark gaps that make paths and steps harder to use.

A coordinated plan keeps fixtures aligned with planting, walls, and patio edges.

The design can support outdoor living without making every part of the property equally bright.

Regular maintenance helps keep lenses, fixtures, and planting clear as the landscape grows.

Why Fixture Planning Matters on This Job

A plan tied to the property

Fixture placement starts with the property's soil, slope, drainage, planting, and hardscape. That site review helps the design fit the land instead of treating every yard the same.

Landscape architect-LED design

Formal landscape architecture training supports decisions about scale, views, circulation, and how lighting fits the full outdoor plan. Our team also brings construction experience to the installation.

A clear design-to-build path

Material selection and architectural integration happen before construction. Licensed work and upfront pricing help define the project before installation begins.

When lighting is the wrong job

Lighting alone won't solve a failing retaining wall, unsafe step, drainage problem, or damaged electrical system. Those conditions need their own assessment before lighting is planned.

Process

How We Plan and Install Outdoor Lighting

1

Review the property at the design stage

We examine soil, slope, drainage, planting, hardscape, paths, walls, and outdoor rooms that may shape fixture placement.

2

Map the areas that need light

The lighting plan marks movement routes, focal features, seating areas, and architectural surfaces that need different light patterns.

3

Match fixtures to each surface

We compare uplights, path lights, spotlights, and well lights based on beam direction, visibility, and the feature being lit.

4

Confirm materials and integration

Material selection and architectural integration are reviewed before construction connects the lighting work with the wider landscape.

5

Explain the quote and project scope

We provide upfront pricing and explain the planned work before installation proceeds.

We recently had Adam help us with two big yard projects. For our primary home we had a goal of making our property lower maintenance so Adam designed a beautiful plan to bring in character with large rocks and appropriate ground cover and plants to replace all of the grass that we took out in the front yard and he and his team replaced our backyard grass with beautiful artificial turf that looks like perfectly cut grass. We are thrilled with the results and can’t say enough about how great Adam was to work with. He was very organized, had great communication and check ins and did exactly what he said he would do, and his team of workers were so respectful of property and easy to work with. After such a great experience we had him also help re design and improve our Suncadia yard to make it fit in more with the mountain landscape. All Projects were finished ahead of deadlines for some key entertaining events we had planned!

Adam and his team transformed our front yard, and the results exceeded our expectations. What started as a space overdue for updating is now a bright, well‑designed landscape with vibrant flowers that looked great all summer. We also really appreciate the reduced lawn area, which has made upkeep much easier. The project was completed in just a few days and included the installation of a new underground sprinkler system. Adam’s crew was courteous, detail‑focused, and consistently left the work area clean and organized at the end of each day. We’re extremely pleased with the finished product and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Adam and his team.

Adam has done landscaping jobs on our property, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We managed to turn our backyard into a mini park, and the expense was more than reasonable. We also changed our high maintenance front yard into a low maintenance clean look that doesn’t demand weekly attention. When you get to the time of picking plants, Adam will meet you at the nursery and he’ll give you excellent advice as to what plants are best suited for your layout and expected results, and your plants are guaranteed for one year, so if some don’t take, he’ll replace them with new ones. Both jobs added value and usability to our place, and now we’re able to enjoy our yard year round

Questions About Outdoor Lighting Fixtures

When planning ahead, what types of fixtures are used in landscape lighting installation?

Uplights, path lights, spotlights, and well lights cover the main fixture types used for landscape lighting installation.

  • Uplights direct light toward trees, walls, or structures.
  • Path lights guide movement along walks and edges.
  • Spotlights focus on selected features.
  • Well lights sit low and send light upward.

The plan matches each fixture to the feature and viewing angle.

How do you decide where each fixture should go?

Fixture placement follows the feature being lit, the viewing angle, and the way people move through the property. We review paths, planting, walls, patios, and outdoor rooms before setting locations. Beam direction also matters because a fixture aimed toward seating may create glare. The final plan should support the property instead of drawing attention to hardware.

For Landscape Lighting Installation, which part of the job changes the quote most?

The fixture mix and the areas included in the plan have the greatest effect on the quote. A focused feature plan differs from lighting paths, walls, planting beds, and outdoor living areas across a larger property. Site access, material selection, and coordination with hardscape also shape the scope. We explain those factors before providing upfront pricing.

When should lighting be planned with planting or hardscape?

Lighting should be planned with planting or hardscape when fixtures need to align with new paths, walls, patios, trees, or water features. Early planning prevents a fixture from landing where construction will disturb it. It also lets the design account for plant form and architectural views. Regular maintenance should be considered as planting grows around the light.

Why do some fixtures create glare for Landscape Lighting Installation?

Glare occurs when a bright fixture sits in a direct sightline or points toward the viewer. Low placement, poor aiming, reflective walls, and missing shielding can all increase glare. We review seating areas, windows, paths, and approach routes during design. The plan can then change the fixture position, beam direction, or fixture type.

What should I prepare before requesting a lighting quote?

Photos, a site plan, and a list of areas you use after dark give the quote discussion a useful starting point. Note paths, patios, planting beds, walls, water features, and spots that feel too dark or too bright. Include any planned landscape work so lighting can fit the design-to-build process. We can then discuss scope and materials.
