What Is Landscape Fabric?

Landscape Fabric is a permeable ground cover that blocks sunlight and slows weed growth while allowing water and air to pass through. Gardeners place it over prepared soil and secure it beneath mulch, gravel, or other surface materials. The material can also help separate soil from decorative stone in selected garden areas.

How Landscape Fabric Works

Landscape Fabric works by covering soil and reducing the light that weeds need to grow. Small openings in the material let water and air move through. The fabric usually sits beneath mulch, gravel, or another finished surface.

Installation starts with weed removal and soil preparation. The material is cut around plants and fixed to the ground with landscape staples. Overlapping edges help limit gaps where weeds can appear. Mulch or gravel protects the fabric from sunlight and keeps the garden surface neat.

Landscape Fabric suits paths, rock beds, and some low-maintenance planting areas. It is less useful where plants spread by runners or where soil needs regular planting. Mulch and Landscape Edging often work with the fabric to keep the surface in place.

Expert Note

When we plan garden renovation work, we check the soil, drainage, and plants before choosing Landscape Fabric. We cut openings carefully around existing plants and secure the edges beneath the planned mulch or gravel. We also check that the fabric won't limit future planting or soil care.

Landscape Fabric in Practice: A Real-World Example

A garden renovation may include Landscape Fabric beneath a gravel path beside planting beds. The team prepares the soil, fits the fabric around the path edges, and covers it with the selected gravel.
