What Is Geotextile Fabric?

Geotextile Fabric is a synthetic textile placed in soil to separate, filter, reinforce, or protect ground materials. In drainage work, the fabric lets water pass while limiting soil movement into gravel or pipe openings. The correct type depends on soil conditions, water flow, and the role the fabric must perform.

Local relevance: Issaquah's wet winter weather can keep soils saturated, so drainage fabric must suit local soil conditions and maintain a clear path for excess water.

Key Takeaways About Geotextile Fabric

  • It separates soil from gravel without blocking water flow.
  • Fabric choice depends on soil and drainage conditions.
  • It is not the same as weed barrier fabric.

How Geotextile Fabric Works

Geotextile Fabric works by controlling contact between soil and other materials. A woven fabric can add support where soil needs reinforcement. A nonwoven fabric can filter water while holding back fine soil particles.

In a drainage trench, installers place the fabric around clean drainage rock or a perforated pipe. Water moves through the fabric, while soil stays outside the drainage layer. The fabric must fit the soil, water path, and installation method. Folds, tears, or soil pressed into the fabric can reduce its performance.

Drainage Fabric Placement

  • Fabric lines the trench before gravel enters.
  • Fabric wraps the drainage layer when soil may wash inward.
  • Clean overlaps help keep soil from entering open joints.

Expert Note

When we plan drainage work, we check the soil, water path, and surrounding grade before choosing fabric. We place it so soil stays out of the drainage layer without blocking water movement. Our team also checks for tears, tight folds, and exposed edges during installation.

Geotextile Fabric in Practice: A Real-World Example

For a wet side yard, a drainage trench may use geotextile fabric beneath and around washed rock. The fabric helps keep surrounding soil from filling the rock layer while water moves toward the outlet.
