What Is a Pond Liner?

Pond Liner is a flexible waterproof membrane that holds water inside a pond or water feature. The liner separates water from surrounding soil and helps prevent seepage. Common materials include rubber and reinforced plastic. A pond liner must fit the pond shape and connect properly with drains, skimmers, and other pond equipment.

Local relevance: Issaquah's wet winters can keep pond soil saturated, so proper liner edges and drainage planning help limit water movement around the pond.

Key Takeaways About Pond Liner

  • Flexible membranes follow curved pond shapes.
  • Proper support helps prevent punctures and folds.
  • A pond liner is not the same as a pond skimmer.

How Pond Liner Works

A gloved hand lifts black pond liner beside tools, rocks, sealant, and a small water-filled opening with stones

A pond liner creates a watertight layer between the pond water and the soil below. Installers place the membrane over a prepared basin, then shape it into shelves, curves, and deeper areas. The liner follows the basin so water stays inside the planned pond area.

The liner's edges need secure support and careful finishing. Stones, soil, or other edging materials can cover the exposed border. Openings around a pond skimmer, drain, or waterfall must seal against the liner. A protective underlayment may sit below the membrane to reduce damage from rocks and roots.

Expert Note

When we install a Pond Liner, we inspect the basin for sharp rocks, roots, and unstable soil. We also plan the liner edge around stones, skimmers, drains, and water returns. Our team checks folds and connections so the finished pond holds water as designed.

Pond Liner in Practice: A Real-World Example

A backyard pond may use a flexible liner shaped around a shallow plant shelf and a deeper center. The liner edge can be secured beneath surrounding stone while openings connect to the pond skimmer and waterfall.
