Why do plants keep struggling after a new garden is planted?

Soil drainage, sun exposure, plant spacing, and irrigation zones often explain weak plant growth. Garden design connects those conditions before plants are selected and placed. A site review helps identify areas that hold water, dry out, or receive limited sun. The resulting plan gives each plant a more suitable position and care approach.

Garden Design for Seattle Properties

Garden design helps homeowners decide what belongs in a planting area and where each element should go. The work suits a new garden, a tired planting bed, or a broader outdoor living plan that needs a clear visual direction.

The key decision is whether you need a planting-focused plan or a larger construction scope. We can connect garden design with patios, walkways, water features, retaining walls, lighting, lawn installation, and other outdoor improvements when the property calls for more than planting changes.

  • Identify the garden areas that need a new layout or planting plan.
  • Note existing paths, walls, patios, water features, and outdoor living areas.
  • Share the plants, colors, uses, and maintenance level you want.
  • Ask how the design connects with future construction or landscape lighting.

Service Overview

Garden design is a site planning service that arranges plants, paths, features, and materials for a specific property.

  • Garden design focuses on planting relationships and outdoor character, while hardscaping centers on built elements such as patios, walkways, and retaining walls.
  • Garden design covers Seattle homes and properties across King County and nearby Eastside communities.

What Better Garden Planning Changes

A planting plan gives you a clear basis for choosing plants and placing them.

Good spacing supports mature growth and keeps beds from becoming crowded.

A coordinated layout helps planting areas sit naturally beside paths, patios, and walls.

Design decisions become easier to review before construction or installation begins.

Garden planning can reduce conflicts between plants, irrigation zones, lighting, and built features.

Process

How We Shape a Garden Plan

1

Review the property

We assess the garden areas, existing plants, slope, drainage, sun exposure, and nearby outdoor features.

2

Set the design direction

We discuss how you want to use the space, the plants you like, and the relationship between garden beds and built elements.

3

Place plants and features

We develop the planting layout, set spacing, coordinate materials, and position paths or features within the agreed scope.

4

Connect design to construction

We review how the plan can move into construction when the project includes patios, walls, walkways, lighting, or other installations.

A situation this service fits

A homeowner may have beds that stay wet in one area and dry quickly in another. We would review the site conditions, map the planting areas, and set plant choices around sun, spacing, and irrigation needs. If the garden connects to walls, paths, or other construction, the design scope should address those elements before installation begins.

Reasons to Use a Design-to-Build Garden Plan

Landscape architect-LED planning

Landscape architect-led design connects planting choices with grading, materials, drainage, and construction details. This service is a poor fit when you only need routine mowing or seasonal bed care.

Plans shaped for each property

Every property has its own soil, slope, light pattern, existing plants, and access limits. A tailored plan gives those conditions a place in the design.

Design that can guide construction

The plan can support a wider outdoor project when planting must work with patios, walkways, walls, lighting, or water features.

We recently had Adam help us with two big yard projects. For our primary home we had a goal of making our property lower maintenance so Adam designed a beautiful plan to bring in character with large rocks and appropriate ground cover and plants to replace all of the grass that we took out in the front yard and he and his team replaced our backyard grass with beautiful artificial turf that looks like perfectly cut grass. We are thrilled with the results and can’t say enough about how great Adam was to work with. He was very organized, had great communication and check ins and did exactly what he said he would do, and his team of workers were so respectful of property and easy to work with. After such a great experience we had him also help re design and improve our Suncadia yard to make it fit in more with the mountain landscape. All Projects were finished ahead of deadlines for some key entertaining events we had planned!

I had a great experience with Adam Gorski Landscapes. I'm not big on writing reviews, but this company deserves one! From design to build, the process was flawless. Adam and his team exceeded expectations at every turn. We were honest about our budget, and there was no pressure to go over. That was big for us, and something we didn't find with other companies. Equally important was timing and professionalism. They showed up when they said they would, left the site organized and presentable every day, and finished on time and on budget. The work done was amazing, we get compliments on it over and over! I would recommend Adam and his team to friends and family. If you read this and engage with him, you won't be disappointed.

We now have a fabulous fenced garden where our local deer and elk cannot ravage. They created a beautiful patio and putting green next to the cedar river.

Questions About Planning a Garden

How does soil drainage support healthy plant growth?

Soil drainage supports healthy plant growth by helping roots receive air without staying waterlogged. We review how water moves through planting areas before selecting plants or setting their locations. Plant type, bed layout, spacing, and irrigation zones must work together. A design consultation helps decide whether the garden needs planting changes, broader site work, or both.

When preparing for the service call, what should I prepare before a garden design consultation for a residential or commercial job?

A property sketch, site photos, plant preferences, and outdoor goals give the consultation a useful starting point. Include existing patios, paths, walls, water features, and areas that receive different amounts of sun. Notes about plants you want to keep also help. We use that information to discuss scope and prepare a quote.

Which plants should be grouped together in a planting bed?

Plants should be grouped by compatible light, water, mature size, and care needs. A planting plan places plants with similar requirements together, while spacing allows room for growth. We also consider paths, walls, lighting, and views from the home. The final choices should fit the property and the level of maintenance you want.

When planning ahead, when is garden design the right service for my property before final scope approval?

Garden design fits a property that needs a planting layout, plant selection, or a coordinated garden plan. It also helps when beds must connect with patios, paths, retaining walls, or water features. Routine lawn care does not need this service. A consultation can define whether you need garden planning alone or a wider outdoor installation.

Why does plant spacing matter after installation?

Plant spacing matters because crowded plants compete for light, water, air, and room to grow. The plan accounts for mature size instead of judging space only by the plant's current size. We also place plants around paths, walls, and irrigation zones. This gives the garden a clearer structure as the plants develop.

How does garden design connect with construction work?

Garden design connects with construction by placing planting areas in relation to patios, walkways, walls, lighting, and water features. The plan gives each part a defined place before installation begins. Material selection and architectural integration can then follow the agreed layout. This approach suits homeowners planning a broader outdoor living improvement.

What changes the quote for a planting plan for Garden Design?

The quote changes with the design area, site complexity, number of planting zones, plant selections, materials, and related construction. Existing walls, paths, patios, and water features can add coordination needs. We review the requested scope before providing upfront pricing. You can request a quote after sharing the property goals and design areas.
