About

A planting plan built around your property

Planting design begins with the site, not a plant list. We look at soil, slope, drainage, sunlight, existing trees, pathways, structures, and how you use the yard. The plan then sets the shape of each bed and the role of each plant layer. A canopy tree may provide height, shrubs can define space, and perennials or ground covers can fill lower areas. We also consider mature size, seasonal interest, access, and upkeep. Our work can cover a new garden, a bare foundation bed, a full yard renovation, or planting that follows new hardscape. The right plan must match the property's conditions and your willingness to maintain it. We recommend regular maintenance after installation because pruning, watering, and weed control affect how the design develops.

What Planting Design Covers

Planting design is a landscape plan that places trees, shrubs, perennials, and beds for a specific property.

  • Planting design differs from garden installation because it decides plant fit and layout before plants are placed.
  • The plan connects soil, slope, drainage, light, access, and maintenance needs to each planting area.

2

Set beds and planting layers

3

Match plants to site conditions

We select plants by their fit with soil, light, moisture, mature size, seasonal role, and maintenance needs.

4

Coordinate the full outdoor plan

We align planting areas with patios, walkways, retaining walls, water features, lighting, and other planned work.

5

Present scope and pricing

We recently had Adam help us with two big yard projects. For our primary home we had a goal of making our property lower maintenance so Adam designed a beautiful plan to bring in character with large rocks and appropriate ground cover and plants to replace all of the grass that we took out in the front yard and he and his team replaced our backyard grass with beautiful artificial turf that looks like perfectly cut grass. We are thrilled with the results and can’t say enough about how great Adam was to work with. He was very organized, had great communication and check ins and did exactly what he said he would do, and his team of workers were so respectful of property and easy to work with. After such a great experience we had him also help re design and improve our Suncadia yard to make it fit in more with the mountain landscape. All Projects were finished ahead of deadlines for some key entertaining events we had planned!

Questions about planning a new garden

Who provides planting design in Issaquah?

LandscaperIssaquahwa.com provides planting design for homeowners and property owners in Issaquah. Adam Gorski Landscapes combines formal landscape architecture education with construction experience. We create plant plans that connect soil, slope, drainage, light, hardscape, and maintenance. The work can support a focused garden bed or a broader outdoor improvement with patios, paths, walls, and lighting.

What changes the cost of a planting plan for a full backyard?

The property's size, site conditions, design scope, plant detail, and related outdoor work shape the cost. A plan for one bed differs from a full yard layout tied to patios, walls, drainage, or lighting. We review the property and project goals, then present the planned scope and upfront pricing before work begins.

Can planting design include drainage and hardscape?

Yes, planting design can coordinate drainage, hardscape, lighting, and plant placement as one outdoor plan. Drainage affects which plants fit each area, while patios and paths set bed edges and access. Our design-to-build process starts with site conditions and continues through material selection, architectural integration, and construction planning.

Should I choose plants before the garden layout?

The garden layout should guide plant selection because bed size, light, drainage, and access limit the right choices. A plant list without a layout can create crowding or blocked paths as plants mature. We set the planting zones first, then match trees, shrubs, perennials, and ground covers to each zone.

What should I send before a planting consultation?

Photos, site notes, plant preferences, maintenance goals, and details about existing outdoor features help prepare a useful consultation. Include views of problem beds and nearby patios, paths, walls, or lighting. We use those details with the site review to shape questions about soil, slope, drainage, light, and plant fit.

How does planting design support lower maintenance?

A lower-maintenance plan uses plant choices, spacing, bed shape, and access that fit the care you want to provide. Plants that outgrow a bed create pruning and replacement work, while poor drainage can cause repeat losses. We consider mature size, watering needs, seasonal upkeep, and access before setting the plant palette.

Does the plan cover commercial outdoor spaces?

Yes, we provide landscape design for residential and commercial outdoor spaces. Commercial planting plans must account for arrival areas, walkways, visibility, access, and maintenance demands. We discuss how the space is used, inspect the site, and connect planting areas with the property's hardscape and lighting.

Common Mistakes With Planting Design

  • Choosing plants by appearance alone ignores soil, light, drainage, mature size, and watering needs. We check the site first and match the plant palette to each bed.
  • Placing shrubs at their current size creates crowding as they mature. We use mature height and spread to set spacing, window clearance, and path access.
  • Ignoring water flow can leave plants in wet pockets or dry edges. We inspect slope and drainage before setting bed lines and selecting plants.
  • Treating planting as the last step can leave beds disconnected from patios, walls, and lighting. We coordinate the planting plan with the full outdoor layout.

Key Points About Planting Design

  • Plant selection starts with soil, light, slope, drainage, and site use.
  • Mature plant size controls spacing, access, pruning, and window clearance.
  • Plant layers give trees, shrubs, perennials, and ground covers clear roles.
  • Planting plans can coordinate with patios, paths, walls, water features, and lighting.
  • Regular maintenance helps the garden keep its intended shape as plants grow.

When Customers Call Us About Planting Design

1

Bare Beds After Hardscape Work

New patios, walkways, or retaining walls often leave open soil that lacks a clear planting pattern. The bed must fit the hardscape edge, sight lines, drainage path, and access for future care. We can review the finished layout, set planting zones, and prepare a plan that connects the new work to the rest of the yard.

2

Plants Failing Along A Slope

A sloped bed can lose soil, hold water in low spots, or dry quickly near the upper edge. Plant choice alone won't solve every problem because grading and drainage shape the growing conditions. We inspect the slope and affected beds, then set a planting approach that respects water movement and safe access.

3

A Crowded Garden Needs Structure

Overgrown beds can hide paths, block windows, and make routine care difficult. Mature size, plant layers, and clear access matter before any replacement list is written. We review what should stay, identify the space each layer needs, and prepare a revised layout for selective removal, new planting, and ongoing maintenance.
