About

What water-wise planting changes on your property

Drought-tolerant landscaping starts with the site, not a plant list. We look at soil, slope, drainage, sun, existing lawn, and how you use the space. Those findings shape the planting plan and the materials around it. The work may include soil improvement, mulch, lawn installation or removal, planting beds, walkways, retaining walls, lighting, and other outdoor improvements. The goal is a connected design, so plants are not placed without regard for grading, access, or nearby hardscape. We also explain care needs after installation. Drought-tolerant does not mean maintenance-free, especially while new plants establish roots. Regular maintenance helps protect the planting plan and keeps weeds, mulch, and plant spacing under control.

Process

How we plan and build water-wise planting

1

Inspect soil, slope, and drainage

We assess the conditions that control root health and water movement before selecting plants or changing beds.

2

Map planting zones and uses

We organize areas by sun, moisture needs, access, views, and intended use, then shape the planting plan around those zones.

3

Select plants, soil work, and mulch

We choose plants and soil treatments that fit the site, then coordinate mulch with bed edges, paths, and nearby hardscape.

4

Integrate construction details

We align planting with patios, walkways, retaining walls, lighting, water features, and other approved outdoor elements.

5

Build and explain care

We complete the planned installation and explain the care needs that help new plants establish and beds remain orderly.

What to prepare before planning water-wise planting

A few details help us connect the planting plan to how you use and maintain the property.

  • Mark areas where lawn, bare soil, or stressed plants cause concern.
  • Collect photos that show beds, slopes, drainage paths, and existing hardscape.
  • Note which outdoor areas need seating, play space, screening, or a clear walkway.
  • Bring plant preferences, maintenance concerns, and ideas for lawn replacement.
  • List irrigation questions and any areas where watering has been difficult.

Our Standard

Outdoor Planning

We present planting scope, site work, materials, and planning details before drought-tolerant landscaping begins.

We recently had Adam help us with two big yard projects. For our primary home we had a goal of making our property lower maintenance so Adam designed a beautiful plan to bring in character with large rocks and appropriate ground cover and plants to replace all of the grass that we took out in the front yard and he and his team replaced our backyard grass with beautiful artificial turf that looks like perfectly cut grass. We are thrilled with the results and can’t say enough about how great Adam was to work with. He was very organized, had great communication and check ins and did exactly what he said he would do, and his team of workers were so respectful of property and easy to work with. After such a great experience we had him also help re design and improve our Suncadia yard to make it fit in more with the mountain landscape. All Projects were finished ahead of deadlines for some key entertaining events we had planned!

Adam has done landscaping jobs on our property, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We managed to turn our backyard into a mini park, and the expense was more than reasonable. We also changed our high maintenance front yard into a low maintenance clean look that doesn’t demand weekly attention. When you get to the time of picking plants, Adam will meet you at the nursery and he’ll give you excellent advice as to what plants are best suited for your layout and expected results, and your plants are guaranteed for one year, so if some don’t take, he’ll replace them with new ones. Both jobs added value and usability to our place, and now we’re able to enjoy our yard year round

Adam and his team transformed our front yard, and the results exceeded our expectations. What started as a space overdue for updating is now a bright, well‑designed landscape with vibrant flowers that looked great all summer. We also really appreciate the reduced lawn area, which has made upkeep much easier. The project was completed in just a few days and included the installation of a new underground sprinkler system. Adam’s crew was courteous, detail‑focused, and consistently left the work area clean and organized at the end of each day. We’re extremely pleased with the finished product and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Adam and his team.

Questions about water-wise planting and site design

Who provides drought-tolerant landscaping for homes in Issaquah?

LandscaperIssaquahwa.com provides drought-tolerant landscaping for homes and commercial properties in Issaquah. We assess soil, drainage, slope, sun, and existing planting before preparing recommendations. Adam Gorski brings Landscape Architecture education from Cornell University to a design-to-build process. The scope may include planting plans, soil work, mulch, lawn changes, hardscape, lighting, and other outdoor improvements.

What changes the cost of a water-wise planting project?

Project cost changes with site preparation, planting area, soil work, mulch, lawn changes, drainage, access, and related construction. Existing retaining walls, patios, walkways, lighting, or irrigation can also affect the plan. We review the property and present project scope before work begins. You can request a quote after sharing the site's current condition and your goals.

Can you replace part of my lawn with drought-tolerant planting?

Yes, we can plan partial lawn replacement with planting beds, paths, and outdoor features that fit the property. The layout depends on lawn use, sun, soil, drainage, access, and the look you want. We map the areas first, then connect plant selection with edging, mulch, irrigation questions, and nearby hardscape so the change feels planned.

What should a planting plan include?

A useful planting plan identifies planting areas, plant placement, soil needs, mulch areas, access, and related site features. We also consider drainage, slope, sun, existing lawn, and how each area will be used. A plan can connect with patios, walkways, retaining walls, lighting, and water features. The final scope reflects the property's needs and your preferred style.

Do drought-tolerant plants need maintenance?

Yes, drought-tolerant plants still need care while they establish and as beds mature. Maintenance may include watering during establishment, weed control, pruning, mulch checks, and removal of dead growth. Plant choice can reduce irrigation needs, but it does not remove the need for observation. We explain care needs as part of the installation planning.

What does the 3-5-7 rule mean for planting design?

The 3-5-7 rule is a spacing guide for creating layered plant groupings, not a complete drought plan. Plant water needs, mature size, soil, sun, and drainage still control placement. We focus on those site facts first, then use grouping and spacing to support a natural layout. This prevents a design rule from overriding root space or access.

Can water-wise planting include a patio or retaining wall?

Yes, water-wise planting can coordinate with patios, retaining walls, walkways, lighting, and other outdoor improvements. Hardscape affects bed shape, drainage, access, and soil volume, so we plan those relationships together. Our design-to-build process moves from site review through material selection and construction. The quote should reflect the full scope you want considered.

When Customers Call Us About Drought-Tolerant Landscaping

1

Lawn Replacement With Lower Water Needs

A large lawn can demand more irrigation and upkeep than a household wants to manage. The key decision is how much open lawn the property still needs, and which beds should replace it. We can review the site, map new planting areas, and connect soil work with mulch, paths, and outdoor use before preparing a quote.

2

Plants Failing In One Bed

Repeated plant loss usually calls for a site check before another replacement. Soil texture, drainage, sun, slope, and nearby irrigation all affect the result, so the same plant may fail again without a changed plan. We inspect the bed, identify the likely constraint, and recommend planting or soil changes that fit the property.

3

New Planting Around Outdoor Living

A patio, walkway, or retaining wall needs planting that supports movement and sight lines. Water-wise beds also need enough soil volume and sensible access for future care. We coordinate the planting layout with hardscape edges, lighting, and outdoor use, then explain what to prepare before requesting a quote for the combined work.
